I want to speak with the ghosts of my past. The Coal Miner and his Wife are a dialogue with my Appalachian ancestry, relatives that exist in patchwork stories from a rural childhood. The Victim is a portrait of my younger self made self-centered and socially emaciated from years of disease and surgeries. These paintings are the first time I employed rice paper as a sculptural element. The crowns represent the importance such apparitions can carry within the psyche.
